LisaRaye and Carlos King got candid up on a recent episode of Reality with the King where the actress held nothing back about her life and career. LisaRaye McCoy kept it all the way real answering questions with her signature bluster. She shared information about the judgment she faced at the beginning of her career, the joys of being a grandparent, and what she wants next out of her life and career.
She also commented on healing fractured friendships, the need to date someone who is equally yoked, and keeping a good eye out for scandalous girlfriends. Everyone needs a rich auntie to give them some game. Raye understood the assignment on that mic. There was more than one viral sound stemming from her conversation with King.
Raye had a regal energy to her finding the perfect balance between messy and matronly as she was telling her stories. She respected boundaries but kept it a buck.
We could not get enough of her real talk! See what we learned from their conversation below.
Every time that Raye hits the strip club the dancers go crazy. She regrets not opening her own strip club or starting a lingerie line. “I would have got those girls together you know what I mean? I’d have been making a whole lot more money then and then I could have turned it over to my daughter and still kept it in the family as a legacy,” she told King.
Raye made a strong argument for not coupling up with someone who can’t match her coins. She considers it an act of kindness. “I don’t want to stress you out by trying to keep up with my lifestyle that I already have and I’m accustomed to,” she explained.
“Because if I’m going to these restaurants just for lunch meetings and it takes you your whole check to take me there I don’t want to stress you out. You cannot hang with me You are still wanting to vacation for the weekend, I vacation and go on holiday for the month. We are not going to be able to make this work,” she added. “That’s simple to me.”
Coins are important to Raye but she values character more. When a suitor skipped her mother’s funeral, she showed him the door. “If you leave someone in the midst of a funeral and you don’t know how to pay respects you just not man enough for me,” she stated. “I’m glad that I saw that.” King told her that his poor actions might have been her mother letting her know this man was NOT the one for her from the afterlife.
Raye starred in the Will Packer reality show Queens Court shortly after losing her mother and aunt. “I was filming so I can look at certain scenes and go yep I was up all all night crying you can tell,” she said. Her co-star K. Michelle supported her through her tough times and the two became friends. “She was rocking me while I was crying. We pray together,” she said. “I left that house with a sister friend for real.”
LisaRaye and Carlos King delved into the marriage to Former Premier of Turks and Caicos, Michael Misick. Raye explained that when she served as the First Lady of Turks and Caicos she was given no guidance and had to plan her own agenda for serving the people. Taking on the role with no blueprint was a daunting task. “I left what I was trying to build in my dreams to go over to another country. So I had no friends there, I had no family there. I had no one there for me, no support for me, it was just he and I and I then was thrown into becoming this first lady with no protocol with no this is how you’re supposed to do it and this is what we expect of you,” she said.
The loneliness and lack of support left her feeling like “a princess in a glass house.”
Having that experience was really hard for Raye. It caused riffs between her and her friends. Luckily all roads in the Black entertainment industry lead to Atlanta. She was on a flight to the A and ran into her estranged friend Vivica A. Fox at the airport. “I saw her on a Redeye flight,” she said.
“We actually ended up sitting next to each other so it was nobody but God and we talked the entire flight. She did not know all of the things that I was going through. I had kept a lot of the things you know quiet, as you do in the marriage,” Raye continued. Fox explained why she was unable to be supportive at the time. “She said I’m so sorry I was dealing with my own you know stuff and I just I did not know,” said Raye.
Raye advised others to take this as example that friendships can be healed and restored to a loving place.
Raye would do a Single Ladies Reboot “in a heartbeat.” She loved appearing on the scripted series from VH1.
“I think it’s necessary, I think it’s needed,” she told King. “Even when I did Single Ladies and I was in my 40s and the other girls was in their 30s I thought that it was great to show mature love.”
