‘A Different World’ Sequel Series Could Be Making Its Way To Netflix Soon

Netflix is taking us back to the Hillman College days with a brand-new sequel to the beloved series, A Different World. Originally airing from 1987 to 1993, the show followed Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) as she navigated college life and eventually focused on her friends and classmates after her departure. Now, three decades later, fans are ecstatic to hear that the iconic series could be making a comeback.

The original series, a spin-off of The Cosby Show, tackled important issues like race, class, and gender with humor and grace, setting it apart as a cultural touchstone for Black audiences. The new sequel series promises to build on that legacy, bringing back familiar faces while introducing a new generation of students at the fictional historically Black college.

The Hollywood Reporter shared that the new project would focus on the youngest daughter of Whitley (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison), now a student at their alma mater Hillman.

While Netflix declined to comment, the possible sequel series comes from writer Felicia Pride (Grey’s Anatomy, Queen Sugar) and includes several members of the original show’s creative team, among them producer and director Debbie Allen, Tom Werner (whose Carsey-Werner produced A Different World), and writers Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood. They will also all serve as executive producers on the project, along with Pride and Mandy Summers.

Netflix’s decision to revive A Different World comes at a time when there’s a growing demand for content that reflects the diversity of the Black experience. The platform has been making significant strides in amplifying Black voices and stories, and this latest project could be a testament to that commitment.
