Andra Day’s rendition of the classic hymn “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow” accompanies the release of Netflix’s latest film “The Deliverance.” Day holds a special connection to the film, not only as its lead character, Ebony, but also as the featured singer for the movie’s opening and closing moments.

“I Know Who Holds Tomorrow” was originally penned by Ira Stanphill in1950. Stanphill wrote hundreds of Gospel songs during his lifetime. He reportedly underwent a period of depression during the separation, subsequent divorce and then death of his ex-wife. “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow” was born out of that mental turmoil. It’s a song about not knowing what the future holds, but trusting God in the process.

Day’s version is dripped in contemporary soul, but the concept of having faith isn’t lost on the listener. Accompanied by delicate piano cords, the hymn doesn’t lose its power as Day delivers the poignant line: “I don’t know about tomorrow. I just live from day to day.” The uplifting and soul-stirring performance is sure to rattle listeners’ emotions.

“The Deliverance” is shaking things up on Netflix. It replaced Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry’s “The Union,” for the number one spot this week. The thriller is inspired by the true story of Latoya Ammons. Day plays Ebony, a struggling single mother fighting her own demons. She moves her family into a new home for a fresh start, but strange occurrences on the inside threaten to tear them apart. Ebony now has to fight for the lives and souls of her children.

Day’s involvement with “The Deliverance” marks another successful collaboration with Lee Daniels. The pair also worked together on the 2021 Billie Holiday biopic “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.” The role earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress along with a Golden Globe win and a Grammy win for the film’s soundtrack. Together, Day and Daniels have created a cinematic and musical experience that is sure to win over Hollywood.

Day’s version of “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow” is available anywhere music can be streamed.
