Academy Award-winner Angelina Jolie (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Salt, Maleficent, Eternals) is Maria Callas, one of the most iconic performers of the 20th century in acclaimed director Pablo Larrain’s operatic MARIA. The film follows the American-Greek soprano as she retreats to Paris after a glamorous and tumultuous life in the public eye. MARIA reimagines the legendary soprano in her final days as the diva reckons with her identity and life.
Alongside Jolie, the film also stars a host of international talent including Pierfrancesco Favino (Night at the Museum, World War Z, The Traitor), Alba Rohrwacher, Valeria Golino (Rain Man, Big Top Pee-wee, Hot Shots!), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, X-Men: Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix), Haluk Bilginer (EastEnders), Aggelina Papadopoulou (who plays a young Maria Callas), and Alessandro Bressanello.
The Pablo Larrain (Jackie, Spencer) directed film from a script that Steven Knight wrote. MARIA was produced by Juan De Dios Larraín, Jonas Dornbach, Lorenzo Mieli, Pablo Larraín. Ed Lachman served as the cinematographer while Massimo Cantini Parrini designed the costumes. Guy Hendrix Dyas was the production designer and Sofía Subercaseaux took on editor responsibilities.
Earlier this year (August 29th), MARIA premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. It competed for the Golden Lion (the highest prize given to a film at the Venice Film Festival) and received generally positive reviews from critics. On November 27th, the film will be released in select theaters in the United States. A couple weeks later on December 11th, MARIA will begin streaming on Netflix.
