It was a “Wicked” world in 2024 and it led us to wear shades of pink and green. The film adaptation of the historic Broadway play “Wicked” hit theaters, and we fell in love with the story, the music, and the fashion. “Wicked” sparked dozens of style trends, and costume designer Psul Tazewell was the mastermind behind it all. Paul became the first Black man to win Best Costume Design at the Oscars for his work on “Wicked”

During his acceptance speech, he thanked Cynthia and Ariana for being his “muses.”  “I’m the first black man to receive the costume design award…I’m so proud of this.” he said. “My Ozian muses, Cynthia and Ariana, I love you so much,” he added.

Paul follows in the footsteps of famed costume director Ruth E. Carter, who became the first Black person to win “Best Costume Design” at the Oscars in 2019.

“My mom is here. My whole family is here. I am floored by this honor. Thank you to the academy for recognizing the quiet heroism and the power in a woman like Rita and talking about powerful women. My fellow nominees, the love and community that you have offered to me is a true gift, and I will pay it forward.”
