As nostalgia remains a trend of the moment, finding its way into the new and now, a beloved ’90s sitcom star and OG “it girl” is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. Her name is Maia Campbell.

Thanks to her daughter, Elizabeth Elisha Gutierrez, the effortlessly cool beauty who had everyone in awe back in the day is getting the love and recognition she deserves from a whole new generation. Is the start of a comeback?

We hope so.

Maia Campbell and her daughter just won the #breakingmyheartchallenge.

On August 9, Elizabeth, or @so.leesha on TikTok, jumped on the #breakingmyheart trend, a challenge where TikTokers show off how fine their parents were back in the day. Elizabeth posted a video montage of pictures of her mom in her most iconic roles in TV and film.

See it below.

The video blew up, with fans sharing it all over, reminding everyone just how much of a vibe Maia was—and still is.

Back in the ’90s, Maia was THAT girl. Starring alongside LL Cool J in the hit show In the House and making waves with her guest appearances on several other shows and in movies, Maia was everywhere. She even caught the eye of Tyrese, who featured her in his classic “Sweet Lady” video.

Maia was – and will forever be – THAT girl.

Put a different way, Maia was more than just an actress. She was a whole mood.

Her natural beauty, rich chocolate skin, and effortlessly fly style made her a true icon. She inspired so many of us to embrace our own beauty, just by being herself.

But Maia’s journey hasn’t been easy. In 1998, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and things got tough. She faced challenges with her mental health and substance abuse, and eventually, she had to step out of the spotlight. Around that time, she also lost custody of her daughter Elizabeth, adding even more heartache to her story.

In 2012, Maia bravely opened up about her struggles on Iyanla Vanzant’s Fix My Life. She owned her story, faced her challenges head-on, and committed to positively changing her life.

Now, fans hope to see even more of the actress’ comeback.

Maia’s slowly returning to the public eye, and we love to see it. She’s been spotted commenting on high-profile posts—like LeToya Luckett’s marriage announcement—and interacting with her daughter’s TikTok videos. It’s clear that Maia and Elizabeth are working on their relationship, showing us all that growth and healing are possible.

Maia’s journey is a timely reminder of the power, inner beauty, and strength of Black women. We all experience challenges and struggles, but what matters most is how we manage and overcome them.

After all, isn’t doing so the true definition of being an “it” girl?
