Lee Daniels and Andra Day have done it again—this time, they’re both trying their hands at something new.
“The new horror movies, they just scare from the beginning…as opposed to really understanding character [and] really understanding motivation, and feeling for these people in a deep [and] grounded way,” Daniels continued, “so what we did was make it was make it real an palatable to the African-American experience.”
The Deliverance explores an untapped genre of it’s own—faith-based horror-thriller, as Daniels calls it. Not only is it both he and Andra’s first time exploring this type of suspense (him as a filmmaker and her as an actress), but it is his first non-independently funded film, in partnership with the world’s largest streaming platform, Netflix.

“[Lee Daniels’] intention wasn’t just to scare people, but to scare people to their higher power, and that mattered to me as a believer.” -Andra Day
