In a career spanning over 30 years with timeless Gospel classics, it was only a matter of time before it was Bishop Marvin Sapp’s turn to have a seat at NPR’s Tiny Desk…and he did not disappoint!
Backed by a four-piece band and six-person choir, Sapp gave a refreshing retrospective into his illustrious musical career. We got to hear classics from his days with Commissioned as well as his revered solo work. Sapp tells NPR’s Ashley Pointer that it was his children who inspired him to do a Tiny Desk Concert. “They told me, ‘Dad, Tiny Desk is for the culture,’ ” Sapp said.
Going beyond his music, Sapp made sure to put ministry first, as he took time after the performance to chat and pray with members of the audience. In all, it is perhaps one of the most powerful performances in Tiny Desk history.
