Netflix is making history with its upcoming “A Different World” sequel series, which has secured a rare pilot order. Read more about what we know about the beloved show’s return inside.
This is only the second pilot order in the streaming giant’s history. Unlike traditional networks that regularly greenlight pilots before committing to full seasons, Netflix has predominantly favored straight-to-series orders. However, the decision to move forward with a pilot highlights the significance of this highly anticipated revival.
Since launching its original programming, Netflix has largely avoided pilot episodes, opting instead for direct series orders. The only other instance of a pilot order came with the comedy series “Little Sky,” which was impacted by the 2023 Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike and never moved forward.
Now, “A Different World” is set to break the mold, with plans to shoot the pilot this summer. According to Variety, this will allow producers to fine-tune the show’s tone and ensure strong chemistry among the cast before making a final decision on the series order.
The sequel will introduce a new generation to Hillman College, the fictional HBCU that served as the backdrop for the original series. This time, the story will center around Whitley and Dwayne’s daughter as she follows in her parents’ footsteps at the prestigious institution.
Felicia Pride, known for her work on “Queen Sugar,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “Bel-Air,” will serve as the showrunner, writer, and executive producer. She will be joined by an impressive team, including “A Different World” director and producer Debbie Allen, as well as original series writers Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Bythewood. Mandy Summers and Tom Werner, executive producers of the original series, will also return.
Originally airing from 1987 to 1993, “A Different World” was a cultural phenomenon, tackling issues like race, class, and social justice while highlighting the importance of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The beloved sitcom starred Jasmine Guy as Whitley Gilbert and Kadeem Hardison as Dwayne Wayne, whose evolving relationship became a cornerstone of the series. Other notable cast members included Cree Summer, Sinbad, Glynn Turman, and Jada Pinkett Smith.
While a revival had been discussed for years, previous efforts were hindered by the legal controversies surrounding Bill Cosby. His production company originally developed the show as a spin-off of the hit family sitcom, “The Cosby Show.” Now, with the backing of Netflix and a powerhouse team, “A Different World” is poised to make a triumphant return.
As excitement builds, fans are eager to see whether Netflix will officially greenlight the full series after the pilot airs. Until then, fans can enjoy the original series on the platform. We certainly have been loving the nostalgia.
