When it comes to sampling, it could go two ways: It could be really good… or really bad.

Well, let Jon B. tell it, a recent sampling of one of his signature hits went really, really bad.

The R&B veteran recently stopped by the Can We Talk R&B? podcast, where he broke down some of his records. When the conversation turned to his biggest record, the Top 10 hit “They Don’t Know,” he revealed that he had a bone to pick with a couple of individuals who recently sampled the record.

The culprits: rapper Gunna and R&B siren Chlöe, who sampled the track for their 2022 collab, “You & Me.”

Needless to say, Jon had absolutely nothing nice to say about the record.

“It does get sampled every year by someone. Last year, it was Gunna and Chlöe Bailey…they put that ratchet record out that I couldn’t stand. And I wish they never did.

To add insult to injury, Jon also claims that Gunna sampled the track without his permission.

Actually, never got my rights to do that record either. So…uhh Gunna, we gotta holla about that. That’s some business s**t we gotta handle.

Jon B speaks on Gunna and Chlöe sampling his song “They Don’t Know” for their song “You & Me” and calls their version ratchet, and says he wishes they never put it out.

Also, Jon B makes it clear he can’t stand Gunna and Chlöe’s song “You & Me,” and reveals that Gunna never got… pic.twitter.com/qchzJHD51l

REACTIONS:

Of course, social media has been buzzing about the revelation. While many agree that the sample was trash, some did take issue with the fact that a white artist used the word “ratchet” toward Black artists.

Jon B is entitled to feel like the song is trash, and definitely feel away if gunna never cleared the sample.

HOWEVER… a white man calling black people ratchet is where I have a problem.

I know niggas love Jon B, but this is what happens when yt people get too comfortable. https://t.co/7EHZBmIuIt

Maybe Jon B shouldn’t have used the word [ratchet] as a white man, but he’s not totally wrong. That Gunna & Chloe song is a little… pic.twitter.com/2MaHgIqGVJ

MIND YOU… when Drake sampled Jon B’s song, when Chris Brown sampled Jon B.. he showed all love because 1) he liked the songs, and 2) they both RESPECTFULLY went to him for his blessing. now he’s anti-black cuz he didn’t like Gunna’s song?

I respect Jon B like a mf but I hate when these celebs can’t keep shit between them. He didn’t have to call it ratchet he didn’t even have to say anything about gunna owing him either. Everything be a clout chase to me now w these people https://t.co/IiSjK0qGIE

Jon B didn’t lie, Gunna and Chloe butchered his song. It was a ratchet and ghetto trap & b mess. More artists from the 90s – 00s need to tell these kids NO to sampling. NLE ruined Hot in Herre

Jon B said “He did not like, Gunna & Chloe Bailey’s version of “They don’t know”. He said it sounds ratchet. I feel him, everything can’t be re-did or sampled, sometimes you gotta leave things the original way !

Sometimes, it’s best to leave the classics alone…and it looks like one of those times. Oh well.
