Six years after his untimely passing, Rolling Stone has dropped a bombshell about the death of former Bad Boy Records artist, Craig Mack.
Upon the initial reports of the rapper’s death on March 12, 2018, the family “honored his wishes and repeated his assertion that he had congestive heart failure.” However, the Rolling Stone report and Mack’s death certificate seemingly confirm that the “Flava In Ya Ear” emcee died from HIV/AIDS-related complications, for which he “refused to seek treatment.”
According to Mack’s first wife, Roxanne Hill-Johnson, and his brother Andrew, the rapper learned of his diagnosis shortly before joining the controversial Overcomer Ministry. Andrew expressed that he used the church as “a shield to ward off the shadows of his past.”
“I believe he was very much in denial, but that’s him living his truth to the end. I know that sounds really crazy, but you have to know him to understand that. As much as that bothers me, I understand why he did what he did. He lived his truth.” – Andrew Mack
Mack began telling people that he had congestive heart failure in late 2014, and his health began to waiver. Knowing that he was gravely ill, Mack began documenting his story with music producer Alvin Toney.
However, by March 2018, the rapper was bedridden, with his family left in the dark about the extent of his illness. “I’ve truly, honestly never seen a human being in that condition before. He was catatonic,” Andrew said.
In the end, the family respected his wishes to have no medical intervention. However, his passing led to more questions, including the thought of whether or not he would’ve sought treatment had it not been for his connection to the Overcomer Ministry.
“I’ll never know what the truth is,” says his daughter, Amanda Mack. “So much is a mystery.” However, Amanda does “forgive him [and] believes his intentions were good for trying to find the Lord, but it’s just a bad situation.”
