The 2024 Paris Olympics belongs to Simone Biles. Dominating the gymnastics competition, the 27-year-old gymnast shone brightly over the last two weeks, nabbing an incredible three gold medals and one silver by the end of the Games. And now, as the Games officially came to an end, Biles had the honor of carrying the Olympic flag during the closing ceremony on Sunday, Aug. 11, as the Paris Olympics transitioned into the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
Held at the Stade de France, the athlete graced the stage alongside Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass and musician H.E.R., who performed the American national anthem. Like the true champion she is, Biles showed up to the ceremony wearing a precautionary boot on her foot due to some calf soreness but still managed to captivate the audience with her presence.
Although Biles was all smiles during her appearance at the closing ceremony, we can only imagine her feelings toward the controversy amid the Olympic gymnastics and her Team USA teammate Jordan Chiles.
On Saturday, Aug. 10, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced that they were reversing the inquiry that led to Chiles earning the bronze medal in her floor routine. The reversal comes with the Court saying that Chiles’ coach Cecile Landi didn’t submit her appeal within the one-minute parameter.
As we previously reported, the court determined Landi’s inquiry into Jordan’s scores was filed too late, according to NPR. The rules of the sport require inquiries to be filed within one minute, but Landi’s inquiry was reportedly filed after one minute and four seconds, causing the Romanian Olympic Committee to protest the revised scores in the days following the competition. The protest eventually led the CAS to rule in favor of the two Romanian gymnasts and overturn the original decision, thus returning Jordan’s original scores, placing her back in fifth place, and revoking her medal.
However, the matter isn’t over yet! Today, USA Gymnastics has announced that they are appealing the ruling and even submitted evidence suggesting Landi had spoken to Olympic officials within the one-minute margin and did not violate the rules.
No matter the outcome, Biles, Chiles, and the entire USA Gymnastic Team team will forever be winners to us!
