Starbucks to End Open-Door Policy, Prioritizing Paying Customers

Starbucks is revising its policy on public access, ending its open-door approach that previously allowed individuals to use its facilities, including restrooms, without making a purchase.

A Starbucks spokesperson confirmed the new policy, which will go into effect on January 27, prioritizes paying customers.

Those who do not make a purchase will be asked to leave the premises, and law enforcement may be involved if necessary.

Employees will be trained to enforce the updated rules, which are aimed at ensuring a more secure and comfortable environment for paying customers.

Alongside this policy change, Starbucks is also introducing additional measures to address inappropriate behavior.

These include a strict ban on discrimination, harassment, panhandling, vaping, drug use, and the consumption of alcohol brought from outside sources.

These changes reflect the company’s commitment to creating a safer and more welcoming space for its paying clientele.

This policy shift follows a highly publicized incident in 2018 at a Philadelphia Starbucks.

Two Black men were arrested after they sat at a table for a business meeting without making a purchase, leading to accusations of racial discrimination.

The incident, which was captured on video and quickly went viral, sparked widespread criticism and was seen as a major public relations setback for the company.

In the wake of the event, Starbucks initiated training programs to address issues of racial bias and improve its policies around customer behavior and store access.
