A key component to Black culture is that most of us quite literally wear it on our skin. The many beautiful shades of brown that make up our melanated identity is a feature most are proud of, with traditional sayings like “the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice” holding significance amongst our race. However, that doesn’t negate our fairer skin brothers and sisters from having a seat at the table. In fact, the world of Hollywood shows us just how diverse that spectrum can be.
When people think about Black celebrities, they may immediately think of famous figures whose Black identity is widely recognized. However, there are also celebrities with Black heritage that some people may not know about. A person’s appearance does not always reveal their complete family history, and many celebrities come from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds.

Learning about celebrities with Black heritage can help people understand that Black identity is not limited to one appearance or experience. Some celebrities have one Black parent, while others have grandparents or ancestors who are Black. Their stories can show how complicated and diverse racial identity can be.
Celebrities such as Halsey, Rashida Jones, and Maya Rudolph are examples of public figures with Black heritage who have discussed their multicultural backgrounds. Exploring their family histories and personal experiences can help us learn more about the diversity within the Black community. It also reminds us that we should not make assumptions about someone’s race based only on how they look.
