The 2025 Met Gala theme has just been announced and it’s rooted in historical Blackness. The annual event, set forth annually by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, revealed the theme for the 2025 fashion Super Bowl is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” According to Vogue, it’s inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. And if that isn’t Black enough, the co-chairs are Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour with honorary chair LeBron James.

According to Vogue, Miller described Black dandyism as “a strategy and a tool to rethink identity, to reimagine the self in a different context. To really push a boundary—especially during the time of enslavement, to really push a boundary on who and what counts as human, even.”
Dandyism can be traced back to African rulers of the 15th century. This distinguished style of dress was born as a way for African American men to “defy stereotypes and monolithic understandings of masculinity” through clothing and style,” said Shantrelle P. Lewis in a 2016 NY Times article. Lewis is an organizer at the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago.
Public interest in Dandyism has risen within recent years after Miller’s deeply exploratory book and the traveling exhibit “Dandy Lion: (Re)Articulating Black Masculine Identity, which was on display at the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco.
Miller’s book is the first of its kind to “defy stereotypes and monolithic understandings of masculinity” through clothing and style.
The 2025 Met Gala will take place on Monday, May 5, 2025.
