When Doechii and Lauryn Hill took the stage together at the Jazz in the Gardens Music Festival in Miami this weekend, it was the kind of moment that felt bigger than music. It was a bridge between generations, a celebration of Black women in hip-hop, and an unexpected passing of the torch in a way.
The festival lineup already had fans excited, with Doechii set to perform. But what nobody saw coming was her moment with THE Lauryn Hill. Surprising many, the music icon brought Doechii onstage to perform her legendary hit “Doo Wop (That Thing).”
Some fans have even billed the action as an official “Lauryn Hill” co-sign. Here’s what happened.
Doechii started off the song with the rap part. Then Lauryn joined in, blending her iconic sound with Doechii’s fresh, dynamic presence.
Doechii kept it effortless in low-rise jeans, a bra-top, and a slouchy hat. Lauryn, as always, rocked the stage in a flowing black-and-white floral A-line maxi skirt and a statement head wrap.
Watching the femcees together—Lauryn, the blueprint, and Doechii, one of the most exciting voices in rap today—felt like seeing the past and future of hip-hop collide in the best way.
Their chemistry and energy were unforgettable: iconic, melodic, historical, and culture-shifting.
Both women have always done things their own way. Doechii is a risk-taker, unafraid to push boundaries in her music and style. Lauryn has been a cultural force for decades, setting the standard for what it means to be an artist with something to say.
Together, they created a moment many are still talking about – including Doechii.
“I never been so nervous in my whole life, she is a QUEEN,” Doechii wrote on X/Twitter, processing her main stage moment.
Doechii continued to gush about her moment on Instagram. The Alligator Bites Never Heal rapper wrote an almost love letter to Lauryn: “I would sing your songs as if I wrote them, imagining myself on stage. Each song deepened my love for music and my curiosity to write raps.
She continued, “My favorite lyric in Doo Wop is ‘don’t be a hard rock when you really are a gem’ that stuck with me anytime I wanted to “get even” or harden my heart towards those who wronged me.I carried your principles with me during my coming of age. And I carry them with me now at this current stage of my career, your lyrics are close to my heart.”
It’s one thing to know you’re a star, but it’s another when a legend co-signs it. But who is surprised?
This is Doechii’s year, and everyone knows it. She is WINNING at everything. From taking home a coveted Grammy to shutting down Paris Fashion Week, and now sharing the stage with Lauryn Hill, her star power is undeniable.
What makes this even more legendary? Doechii and Lauryn Hill are now part of an exclusive club—two of only three women to win the Grammy for Best Rap Album. That’s major.

The Jazz in the Gardens Music Festival (March 8-9) was already a must-see event with a stacked line up of names like Busta Rhymes, Coco Jones, and Toni Braxton. But at the end of the day, Lauryn Hill and Doechii were the moment.
And we’re still not over it.
