The Bay Area has always held a niche place in hip-hop culture that stands out from the flashiness of its East Coast contemporaries and grittiness you’d find in Southern rap. Introducing a warped spin on funk classics that became known simply as the “hyphy movement,” the Bay Area helped elevate the art of emceeing to eclectic new heights thanks to artists like E-40, Mac Dre and Mistah F.A.B. among others.

However, if we’re really talking about the influence of Bay Area rap, the conversation isn’t even close to being valid without the inclusion of Too Short.

The Oakland native paid a warm and welcomed visit to The Amanda Seales Show for a conversation that we felt needed to be had. After just coming out of Hip-Hop History Month and the state of generational divide in the game overall,  there was no better time than now to give a living legend his flowers while he’s still here to smell them.

From discussing his career-defining hit single “Blow The Whistle” (seen above) to the hits he’s currently crafting up alongside fellow West Coast rap icons Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg and E-40 as the rap collective Mount Westmore, our time with Too Short only further proved why he still has such a strong influence on the game.

Watch Bay Area rap icon Too Short chop it up with Amanda, DJ Supreme and TJ below here on The Amanda Seales Show:
