Not all sequels are created equal, but some surpass their predecessors in remarkable ways. A recent study using Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer scores reveals the top ten sequels that outshined their original films. Check out their trailers inside.

The list was created using research from Gamblino. The research showcases significant increases in critical acclaim when comparing the sequel films versus the originals. The undeniable Star Trek franchise proved to get better and better with each rendition.

Leading the list is Star Trek: First Contact, which scored an impressive 93 on the Tomatometer, 46 points higher than Star Trek: Generations. This eighth installment reinvigorated the franchise, solidifying its place as a fan favorite.

Second place goes to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, praised for its depth and intensity. With a score of 86, it earned 34 more points than Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

In third is Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, continuing the franchise’s winning streak. It scored 79, a 27-point improvement over the original.

Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok claims fourth place with a dazzling 93, surpassing Thor: The Dark World by 26 points. Its humor and colorful visuals resonated with fans worldwide.

The musical sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again lands fifth, scoring 80, a significant 25-point increase over the original. Its mix of nostalgia and new storytelling earned critical praise.

Other high-ranking sequels include Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (94), Logan (93), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (96), Creed (95), and Mad Max: Fury Road (97). These films enhanced their franchises with fresh narratives, stronger character development, and engaging visuals.
