One of the greatest producers of all-time celebrates his 53rd birthday today! Continue reading to check out a gallery of some of Timbaland’s most massive hits throughout his legendary career.

Timothy Zachery Mosley was born in Norfolk, Virginia where he began DJing and producing tracks as a teenager. He attended and graduated from Salem High School of Virginia Beach. While attending, Timbaland began a long-term collaboration with rapper Melvin (Magoo) Barcliff. Mosley also joined the production ensemble S.B.I. (Surrounded By Idiots), which included his producer cousin Pharrell Williams. The young producer’s tireless work led him (and Magoo) to become part of Devante Swings’s label called Swing Mob, after they were introduced through Missy Elliott. Timbaland did  production work on a number of projects with DeVante, including the Jodeci LP The Show, The After-Party, The Hotel. Due to the connection he had with Missy, as she began receiving recognition as a songwriter, he would often be contacted to produce remixes of her songs.

In the mid 1990s, Timbaland got his big break when he teamed up with Missy to produce Aaliyah’s critically acclaimed album One in a Million, which helped define his signature sound. He became known for his unconventional beats, which blended hip-hop, R&B, and electronic elements (syncopated rhythms and unusual sound effects). His collaboration with Missy produced a series of successful albums and hits throughout the late ’90s and 2000s. In the early 2000s, Tim’s influence grew even larger as he worked with major artists like Jay-Z, Ludacris and Justin Timberlake. He cemented his status as a leading producer in pop and R&B with Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveSounds, which was released in 2006. His work on the track “Cry Me a River” became especially iconic.

On top of producing for other artists, Timbaland has also released his own albums, Tim’s Bio: Life from the Bassment, Shock Value and Shock Value II, featuring multiple hits. He formed his own label (Mosley Music Group) where he continues to discover and nurture new artists, similar to how he did with Nelly Furtado, Keri Hilson, OneRepublic, Bubba Sparxxx and more. Along with fellow producer Swizz Beats, Timbaland co-founded the webcast series Verzuz in 2020.

Timbaland’s career has seen continued evolution as he’s adapted to new trends while maintaining his distinct production style. He’s credited with revolutionizing the sound of contemporary R&B and hip-hop, influencing a new generation of producers. Timbaland remains a respected figure in the music industry, with a legacy of innovation and hit-making. To honor him on his special day, check out some of the super producer’s biggest hits below. Let us know which songs are your favorites and if we’re missing any. HAPPY 53RD TIMBALAND!
