What To Watch Film: 25 Films Named To The National Film Registry For Preservation By The Library Of Congress

This week’s ‘What To Watch’ film list is inspired by the 25 films named to the National Film Registry for preservation by the Library of Congress. This year’s selections include beloved Hollywood classics, groundbreaking independent works, and experimental gems that represent nearly 130 years of cinematic history. The Library of Congress has announced the addition of 25 culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant films to the National Film Registry for 2024. Highlighting the diversity of American filmmaking, the registry now includes titles ranging from the silent short Annabelle Serpentine Dance (1895) to the social media drama The Social Network (2010). Notable entries include Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, the first film from the iconic franchise to join the registry, and Eddie Murphy’s Beverly Hills Cop, recognized for its cultural impact and Murphy’s legendary debut performance.

Other popular additions include the cult horror classic Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), the coming-of-age favorite Dirty Dancing (1987), and the Coen brothers’ Oscar-winning No Country for Old Men (2007). Films like Mi Familia (1995) and Uptown Saturday Night (1974) also reflect the depth and diversity of storytelling across different eras and communities.

The registry’s selections are based on nominations submitted by the public, with over 6,700 titles suggested this year. Films like The Social Network and Powwow Highway received strong public support, demonstrating the public’s role in preserving America’s cinematic heritage.

The National Film Registry now boasts 900 titles, curated from the Library of Congress’s vast collection of over 2 million moving images. Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden emphasized the importance of these efforts, stating, “Films reflect our nation’s history and culture and must be preserved… as we work to preserve our cultural heritage.”

This year’s selections also highlight the efforts of the National Film Preservation Board, chaired by Jacqueline Stewart, who works with filmmakers, archivists, and institutions to preserve a diverse range of works. Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will celebrate the new additions with a special program on Dec. 18 at 8 p.m. ET, featuring discussions between Hayden and Stewart.
