Although a diva in the world of entertainment for decades, actress Sheryl Lee Ralph has been experiencing a newfound surge of adoration within the past few years specifically thanks to her Emmy-winning stint portraying the beloved Barbara Howard on ABC’s hit comedy, Abbott Elementary.
Of course with notoriety comes nosiness, which has recently been playing out for the original Dreamgirls star as it relates to what she’s gone on record to describe as her “long-distant marriage” to husband, Pennsylvania State Senator Vincent Hughes. The topic came up once again during her visit to The Jennifer Hudson Show on Monday (Feb 3), where she got a bit more detailed about the set-up that’s kept them together for the past 20 years and counting.

To make things a bit more clear where she states, “we have been married, we have been divorced,” Sheryl and Vincent met back in 2003 after both experiencing divorce in past relationships. In a joint interview with ESSENCE, they credited doing relationship counseling at the beginning of their union as a healthy way of getting any past negativity out on the table which resulted in an even stronger bond. Hughes told the publication at the time, “We knew the pain, but we knew we loved and respected each other immensely. We hadn’t even talked about marriage, but we knew we wanted to go to relationship counseling. If you’re honest in your session, you’re leaving everything wide open. It was a way to really reveal ourselves to one another with guidance. It was extremely helpful. I would encourage counseling whether you have a blended family or not.”
As Sheryl shared with J-Hud, this may not be a situation for the weak of heart, the young lovers out there or those who simply don’t have trust in their relationship. “[Vincent] and I, we’re on the same place,” She said with the utmost confidence, going on the firmly assert, “I tell any woman: ‘You think you can get my man? Go on and try! And If you get him, you better keep him!’”
