Day one in the trial of Memphis rapper Young Dolph‘s alleged killers began with shocking testimony from Cornelius Smith, one of the men prosecutors say took Dolph’s life in exchange for a proposed $100,000 bounty put out by Big Jook, brother of rapper Yo Gotti.

In court Monday (September 23), Smith confessed to his role in the killing, identifying himself as the man seen firing the semi-automatic weapon in the November 2021 surveillance footage. Smith said he felt no emotion during the shooting and strictly saw it as an opportunity to earn cash.
“I wasn’t feeling nothing at the time.” Smith said. “I was just trying to get some money … I saw him standing by the window. I just got out of the car and started shooting.”
Although the plan was to split the cash between himself, Justin Johnson and Hernandez Govan, his co-defendants, Smith said he only ended up getting $800 for the deadly shooting.
According to Smith, Johnson was the second gunman and Govan informed them of the bounty Jook, real name Anthony Mims, had on Dolph. Smith told the court he and Johnson had been stalking Dolph ahead of a planned Turkey Drive and that after the shooting outside Makeda’s Cookies, he FaceTimed Jook to confirm the deed was done.
In January 2024, Jook was fatally gunned down outside a Memphis restaurant.
“I saw him (Dolph) standing by the window and just jumped out and started shooting,” Smith testified.
